7 Tips for Babywearing in Wet Weather

Rainy days don’t have to stop you from getting outside with your baby. Whether you’re doing a quick daycare run, walking the dog, or just need to move your body (and your mind!), babywearing can (and likely needs to be) still be part of your day - even in the wet weather.

Here are our top tips for babywearing safely and comfortably in wet weather:

1. Choose a quick-drying baby carrier

Some fabrics handle wet weather better than others. Cotton tends to hold onto moisture, so if you’re heading out in the rain, opt for a carrier made from linen or a technical blend. Linen is lightweight, breathable and dries quickly — perfect for warm, humid, or wet conditions.

2. Dress in breathable, weather-appropriate layers

You and your baby regulate each other's body temperature while babywearing, so try to dress yourself and your baby in natural fibres and avoid synthetics. We recommend choosing wool, fleece, linen or other breathable fabrics that stay warm even when damp. Don’t forget baby’s feet and head — a warm hat and dry socks/booties make a big difference!

Bonus tip: don't dress baby in a bulky puffer jacket, vest or suit, as this will make it much harder to get a safe, comfortable fit in the baby carrier (and the car seat, when you transfer them into the car to head to your next destination!).

3. Use a babywearing rain cover or jacket

A rain cover or babywearing-friendly jacket can be a total game changer. We love the Wombat & Co Babywearing Coats - designed to zip over both you and your baby for hands-free, weatherproof snuggles. The babywearing panel of the Wombat & Co Babywearing Coats also fits over your pregnancy bump, can be swapped to the back when your little one is ready for back carrying, and it can be removed so you can continue to stay protected from the rain regardless of whether you are pregnant, babywearing or enjoying a day out in nature on your own!

4. Try our kids' raincoat hack

Got a waterproof kids' raincoat? You can turn it into a quick DIY cover for your baby carrier in a pinch! Check out our Instagram Reel to see how this clever hack works:

5. Watch your step

Wet surfaces can be slippery so it is important to be as careful as possible, especially when you're carrying a precious bundle. Wear supportive shoes with good grip, slow your pace, and if possible, keep one hand free for balance.

Back carrying can make it easier for you to see water hazards in front of you, so if you and your baby are ready consider leaving this skill before you head out in the rain.

6. Protect baby’s face

Pop a wide-brimmed hat on bub to keep rain off their face while still letting them see and breathe easily. Always check their airway is clear and unobstructed. An umbrella is another great option to keep you both dry.

Safety tip: avoid covering a young baby's head with the hood of your baby carrier, as this could limit your ability to monitor their airways and may accidentally push baby's chin down/forwards which could actually cut off their airways altogether. Hoods are best used for supporting the heavy head of a toddler when they're asleep on your back.

7. Rain happens - pack spares

As a good friend of mine once told me - there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad preparation! Pop a spare outfit for yourself and baby, some cloth wipes, and a waterproof wet bag into your nappy bag — just in case.

Rainy days can still be babywearing days!

A little planning goes a long way. With the right carrier, layers, and weather protection, you can keep your baby close and keep moving - even when it’s wet outside.
